December 7th

We have been busy getting ready for our holiday sing on Friday!  The children have been working hard to learn the words and motions for our show.  We can’t wait to perform for you at 11:00 in the MUR.  In Reader’s Workshop we have been practicing using our pointer power to help us become super readers.  We make sure what we are reading and pointing to matches.  We use our snap words help us check our reading and we are watching out for “kryptonite” (multisyllabic) words.  In writing we continue our work with show and tell books.  We are writing pattern books using our snap words and are working on adding an ending sentence to wrap up our story.   In math the children were introduced to number bonds.  We will be working with these to model the composition and decomposition of numbers.  Our phonemic awareness story was The Wild Christmas Reindeer by Jan Brett.  We had fun making reindeer and elfing ourselves on Wednesday during centers.   We also read several Hanukkah books this week in class.  We made a menorah, played dreidel, and enjoyed latkes in class!

November 9th

Happy Friday Kindergarten Families!  Here is the weekly recap.

*Gratitude is our November Character Trait.  We read Turkey on the Table written by Rancho Moms Kerry Maunus and April George.  We have be busy “dressing” our turkey with what we are thankful for.

*In phonics we wrapped up Bend 2 of our Word Scientists Unit of Study.  We learned new snap words (here, this, is). We learned and studied the words park and house.

*In Writer’s Workshop we have been busy writing Show-and-Tell books.  We have been busy adding longer labels to our pictures and have started adding sentences, using our snap words, to our work.

*We finished up Module 1 in math and will be working with shapes next week.  On Thursday we had math centers.  The children played math games on Dream Box, Bump It with a partner, and had some practice writing their numbers the school way.

*Our phonemic awareness story this week was Gracias the Thanksgiving Turkey by Joy Cowley.  In centers on Wednesday, we did some fun turkey activities and played a turkey math game.

*On Monday we had Soul Shoppe.  The children learned about different ways to breathe when they are feeling frustrated or angry.

*Today we saw our third grade buddies and did a directed drawing of a turkey.

November 1st

Happy Friday Kindergarten Families!  It was another great week in kindergarten.  We continued our pumpkin theme with our phonemic awareness story Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper.  On Monday we did a simple science experiment and made pumpkin volcanoes.  The children worked in table groups to mix a base (baking soda) and an acid (vinegar) inside a pumpkin shell.  Their reactions were priceless!  We wrote a class book about pumpkins using our snap words I, see, and the.  On Wednesday we celebrated Halloween with a parade and party.  Thank you Gina Halow and Alex Barber for organizing the perfect party!  Thank you to all of the parents who came in and helped run each activity!  On Thursday we made and tasted pumpkin soup.  We also visited the library and met author Jon Agee.  The children enjoyed listening to him retell some of his books while illustrating the characters at the same time!

October 26th

Kindergarten is always a busy place, but last week had to have been the busiest one in Room 24 history!  Here is a peek at what we did.

On Monday, we met with our third grade buddies and played Roll and Draw a pumpkin.  To prepare for an activity on Wednesday, we read Pumpkin Jack and Too Many Pumpkins.  During snack we tasted pumpkin pie.

Tuesday we celebrated the 50th Day of Kindergarten.  The children had a chance to travel back in time to the 50’s.  We had a sock hop with Mrs. Lohse’s and Mrs. Simmon’s kindergartners.  We then had centers and got to practice hula hooping, making 50’s themed crafts, and enjoying root beer floats!

Wacky Wednesday was extra wacky this week as we had 10 extra kindergarten friends for the day.  I am super proud of my class for being so flexible and welcoming Mrs. Simmon’s kindergartners into our classroom.  During our pumpkin themed centers we made and tasted pumpkin pancakes, made a pumpkin glyph, investigated our pumpkins, and made another 50th day of school project.  Thank you to Mrs. Christensen, Mrs. Kruger, Mrs. Yang, and Mr. Schneider for being flexible too and taking on a few extra kids during centers!

Thursday was the APEX Fun Run.  It started off a little foggy, but the sun came out as we ran.  Fun was had by all and many laps were run!  Thank you for your support and generosity!

To wrap up our week made and played with pumpkin slime!  See if your kindergartner remembers the three ingredients needed to make slime.
