Inclusion & Diversity (IDC)

About "IDC"

Our Vision

The Inclusion and Diversity Committee’s (IDC) vision for the 2017-18 school year is to create a community where parents and students have a sense of comradery at Rancho Romero.

Our Mission

The IDC serves in support of building awareness for our children, families, and staff and coordinating care-enhancing efforts and events throughout our school.

Why this committee?

All of our children deserve to be validated, affirmed, and included by peers, staff, and the community.

The IDC meetings are held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, except in November and December where it will be held on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. The location will vary, so please keep a look out in the Ranchogram or Evite that will be sent out with meeting details.

The monthly meetings will be focused on the upcoming events, where we will discuss, plan and coordinate the details.

If you want to get involved with the IDC, please contact Sandra Willman - svargas430@gmail.com or Farashta Zainal - farashta.zainal@gmail.com. Join our Facebook group that operates independent of PTA, the school, and the district at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1955763377982089/

My name is Sandra Willman, and I’m the current co-chair of the Inclusion and Diversity Committee (IDC). I am the parent to two Rancho students. My daughter, Emma, is in the 3rd grade (Mrs. Cox’s class) and my daughter, Grace, is in Kindergarten (Mrs. Lohse’s class). I joined the IDC when my oldest daughter was entering Kindergarten in 2014. My interest in joining the committee was stemmed from being new to the Bay Area and sensing the lack of diversity in our new community. My hope is to embrace and educate one another on our differences.

My name is Farashta Zainal, and I am co-chairing the IDC with Sandra. I have two kids enrolled at Rancho Romero. My son, Imad, is in 2nd grade (Mrs. Dotson’s class) and my daughter Farrah, is in Miss Mitchner’s TK class. I joined IDC two years ago because I knew I wanted my two kids to have a more positive elementary school experience than the one I had as a new immigrant to the U.S.. I believe planting the seed early in life is vital to the development of culturally sensitive kids. My hope is to develop programs that will foster their learning for years to come.

The FAIR Education Act requires that California K-12 schools provide Fair, Accurate, Inclusive and Respectful representations of people with disabilities and people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender in history and social studies curriculum.

In our last two meetings, members showed an interest in diversifying and creating events around books we have in our Library and classrooms. Last year, our school was able to purchase a fair amount of books through funds that were raised. Farashta, Carolyn and I met with our principal, Sandy Kontilis, in which we discussed and shared ideas on how to promote the books we have and to get them in the hands of our children. One of the ideas is to feature a monthly theme, where we will display books in the library (visible to the kids) and design a bulletin board that highlights the theme.

How can you help? We will need volunteers to work with our librarian, Linda Mailho, to create a bulletin board and assist in displaying the books in the Library.  We will send out a Sign Up Genius with more details and the featured themes for each month. Please review and let us know which month you are interested in. Farashta and I will start with November, which is “Native American Month”. We will also include a Thanksgiving Board in the Library, where the kids could write messages sharing what they are thankful for.
