In Our Classroom...

We are kind to each other.

All toys are for all children.

Colors are for everyone.

Everyone gets to pick their own style.

Being different is OK.

We stand up for others.

It has been a busy few weeks in kindergarten!  Our 50th day of school was a huge success. We learned a little bit about what life was like in the 1950s, and even tried to learn a few of the more popular dances. At the sock hop with the other kindergarten classes, we got to do the Hand Jive, the Twist and the Stroll. Even if they couldn't do the dances, I think the kids all still had fun. Thanks to our parent volunteers, the class then got to practice hula hooping, make root beer floats and do a few 1950s themed crafts.

Halloween was a big success thanks to the planning efforts of Lindsay Ryan and her crew of volunteers.  Thank you for all of your time and energy in making this a fun morning for the class.

We have begun our second module in Math.  This unit focuses on two and three dimensional shapes. Last week, we learned that polygons are closed shapes made from straight lines. We examined a variety of triangles and practiced constructing them with straws.

In our "Super Powers" unit in readers workshop, we started learning about the strategies we can use to become good readers. We used our "pointer power" to read familiar words in the classroom.  We read our class name chart, word wall words, sight words, poetry folders, letter charts, and songs.

Thank you for your support in helping your child learn his/her sight words. I can already see a difference for many of the students! If you happen to notice sight words when you are out and about with your child, don't hesitate to point them out. Not only will it help your child develop greater automaticity with the words, but he/she will be excited as well.

We will be having our class Thanksgiving Feast on Friday, November 17th at 10:45am. Each family will be asked to provide an item for our celebration.  You will find a note in your child's homework folder on Monday. Please let me know if you have any questions. We would love to have some help on that day, if you are available. Just let me know. Thank you in advance for your help!
