Room 6 Rocks!

Room 6 Updates - September 25

Dear Room 6 Families,


Thank you Alex and Chris Barber for hosting our class cocktail party on Friday! Your house is beautiful and the food and wine was delicious. This is a wonderful group of students and parents - it's going to be a great year!

Reading - We are learning all about how to solve hard words. Students are becoming more independent every day. When you read with your child, see if they can use their tools to solve the word before you offer a suggestion. We are also working on stamina - our whole class is reading quietly for 10 minutes! My goal is to reach 15 minutes by conference week.


Math - We have been working on adding numbers within 10 and 20. Students will benefit by knowing their doubles (2+2) and facts to 10 (6+4, 7+3 etc.) with automaticity. We are also working on solving the following types of problems:  add to with result unknown (5+3=?) and add to with change unknown (5+?=8). This week we will concentrating more of our attention on subtraction. 


Writing - We continue to work on our personal narratives. Students are working to make their pieces better with revisions. This week we will work on making our people move and talk.


Language Arts - We will continue to focus on learning our new trick words, digraphs at the beginning and end of words, and good letter formation. Please reinforce good letter formation at home, making sure students start their letters at the top and go down, not bottom up!


Homework - Thank you for making sure the take home book bags are returned on Fridayj and the homework folder is returned each day. It is so helpful! Also, keep in mind that homework should be no more than 30 minutes a night, including reading for 20 minutes. That means math and language arts should be 10 mins per night at the most. If you find you are spending more time than that, please let me know.


Once again, thank you all for your support with our fundraiser. The students are having so much fun working to raise money for our school.

Room 6 Updates - September 8th

Dear Room 6 Families,


Thank you to all of our classroom volunteers so far this year. Your help with centers, library, and art is greatly appreciated. I am so thankful for your support!


Everything is going well in Room 6. The students are getting used to the routines and expectations of first grade. They amaze me every day with their curiosity, creativity and enthusiasm. I’m noticing new friendships and new problem solving skills. To that end, there is a parent workshop on Monday night from 6:00-7:30, September 11th for our new Character Education program, Soul Shoppe. I would encourage at least one parent from each family attend. Imagine the synergy we could create if we were all using the same language and skills, at home and at school, to solve problems and communicate our feelings. It would be amazing!


Book bags and homework folders:  Please remind your child to return their book bag on Friday and homework folders every day. Even if nothing is due, I often send papers home and they tend to get lost if not kept in a folder. Also, I specifically set aside time on Monday to shop for new books. If the book bags aren’t returned, it’s hard for me to fit in time later in the week to help a student get new books.   Thank you for your help!


This week’s (and last week’s) homework refers to some alphabet letters from Unit 1. If you don’t have the letters, just have your child write the words on the writing grid and change the corresponding sounds. For example, they say and write the word “kit” and change the /t/ to /d/ and write “kid”. I hope that helps!

Room 6 Updates - August 25th

Dear Room 6 Families,


Thank you all for coming to Back to School Night on Wednesday. It was great to see you all and I hope you walked away with a good feel for first grade.


I also want to thank you for all of your support, volunteering for centers, library, parties etc.  Mandy emailed the sign-up geniuses this afternoon so be sure to check those out.


And a huge thank you to our Room Moms, Mandy Thiessen, Nicole Davidson, and Alex Barber! I was remiss in not introducing them on Wednesday (so sorry!) but I am very appreciative of their help!


Last, but not least, the SLIP reading assignments are in your child’s homework folders, along with the first homework packet. I tried to accommodate requests if a child was “on the bubble”, but, quite honestly, there was an obvious split and I made the placements accordingly. If your child’s placement causes extreme difficulties, please let me know and we can see if we can work something out. I put a lot of thought and consideration into the placements and I truly believe your children are where they will get the most benefit.

Room 6 Updates - August 18th

Dear Room 6 Families,


What a week!! We are off to a great start. I am thoroughly enjoying getting to know my new first graders, and we are quickly learning the routines and expectations of a first grade classroom. As a matter of fact, our science teacher told me that our class was the most well behaved class she had seen all day. Way to go first graders! As we like to say, “Room 6 rocks!”


Just a few quick reminders for next week:

  • Solar eclipse:  Monday, 8/21. Thank you to those parents who volunteered to help. We will be headed to the upper playground around 10:00 to view the maximum coverage, however we will be making observations and talking about the event throughout the day.
  • Back to School Night:  Wednesday, 8/23. First grade presentations are from 5:30 – 6:15.
  • Picture day:  Thursday, 8/24


If you have not yet completed your Annual Update with the district, your child will not be allowed to use ANY technology in the classroom or computer lab. This is because the technology permission slip has not been signed. Non-action is considered a no. If you would like your child to use technology, please complete the Annual Update ASAP.


Our schedule for next week is the same as this week, with the exception of Monday being a full day. We will transition to the early worker/late worker schedule the week of August 28th. You will be notified of your child’s schedule on August 25th.
